By Bill Goodykoontz — How was The Wave Discovered?
On this week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we look into the history of the Wave — it's about 200 million years old, so it's got some — and answer the question: How was the Wave discovered?
Before the Wave became one of the most photographed landscapes in the Southwest, it was a remote and largely unknown place within the Paria Wilderness. In this special podcast, Fatali, the Light Hunter was included in sharing his story of early journeys into what he once called The Mystery Gardens—long before permits, trails, or global recognition.
This isn’t just a story about photography—it’s about discovery, devotion, and a time when the landscape revealed itself only to those willing to truly seek it.

Light, an instrument for healing in its physical beauty and spiritual energy that is all around us. To be a hunter, is chasing faith for connection and reverence, under a spiritually guided meditation for the image captured through nature.
The name "Light Hunter" was given with honor to Fatali by the Navajos back in the early 80's, when he first explored and helped discover slot canyons bordering Northern Arizona-Southern Utah. These sacred canyons, like the now famous lower Antelope Canyon, Navajo Nation Tribal Park, became his cathedrals of stone as a sanctuary for solace during his spiritual healing as a teenager. This slot canyon, before it's popularity, was only accessed by those who rappelled by ropes and who dared entering the unknown deep sandstone abyss. This was the beginning of his intimate relationship with the canyons, its people and the Light.

CREATIVE BY NATURE, INSPIRED BY NATURE
"I've been on a mission my whole life in search of the big picture. My Mother's death when I was a teenager, was the beginning of this hunt for Light. The discoveries on my journeys in wild and remote places of nature, is how I found my inner peace and creative voice to share with the world. All healing journeys start within, that feed hope from God's eternal love. The Creative Spirit is inspired by nature. Let's unfold together, the Creator's many blessings of beauty to be found, discovered and captured, in all its Light.
I have not traveled this journey alone without the support of our special friends and my family. Especially my life-mission partner, lovely wife Morgan and my boys Mykel and Angelo, who have found their own unique creative voices and professions. I'm so proud of each of them. Thank you all for the supportive understanding in the passion and obsession I have with my love affair for the hunt of Light."
